The cast of Opera Idaho's Jacques Brel (2007)

The National Endowment for the Arts in its recent Annual Report featured Opera Idaho and its 2007 production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.

The Annual Report featured two organizations from each state that were funded by the NEA. Opera Idaho received a $10,000 grant for Jacques Brel. Performances were at The Big Easy (now The Knitting Factory) in Boise’s BoDo District.

Dr. Christopher Raynes has been hired as Chorus Master for the 2009/10 season. Dr. Raynes will prepare all choruses during the season and will be involved with auditions for the Resident Company.

An experienced teacher and conductor, Dr. Raynes is currently a member of the music faculty at Boise State University where he teaches voice and is co-director of the Opera Theatre program. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College in theatre and music, and Master of Music (Music Education) and Doctor of Musical Arts (conducting and vocal pedagogy) degrees from the University of Arizona. He is active as a teacher, conductor, stage director and writer, and has conducted, directed and sung many performances with Opera Idaho as well as at Boise State University. He has performed in many parts of the United States and in England as well as locally with the Boise Philharmonic, Opera Idaho, Boise Baroque and the Boise Master Chorale.

Met live broadcast of Rossini’s opera stars Elina Garanca. Edwards Theater, followed by Opera Idaho reception at Carino’s.

Broadcast begins 10:30 am (earlier than usual); at the reception immediately following, meet Michele Detwiler and Leslie Mauldin, who will perform the roles of Tisbe and Clorinda (the ‘ugly sisters’) in Opera Idaho’s Feb. 2010 performance of the same opera.

Auditions set for 2009/10 Season

Opera Idaho announces auditions for the 2009/10 Resident Company. The Resident Company is the pool of local singers from which we will pull for a number of things:

  • Choruses and cover roles for our main-stage and other productions (all lead roles are cast in separate auditions)
  • Any solo work for special events
  • Referral jobs

Auditions will be held at the Opera Idaho rehearsal studio, 513 S. 8th St. at the following times:

For all of 2009/10 season (including Faust)
Friday, May 8, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Saturday, May 9, 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Wednesday, June 17, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm & 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Thursday, June 18, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm & 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Remainder of 2009/10 season (not including Faust)
Thursday, Sept. 17, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Friday, Sept. 18, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm & 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Saturday, Sept. 19, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

You are asked to prepare at least one operatic or operetta aria or a musical theater selection, preferably memorized and in either Italian or English. You may sing as many as three selections. You are encouraged to bring your own accompanist, although one will be provided at the auditions free of charge. You will be sent a form in advance of the auditions, which we’ll ask that you complete and bring to your audition.

Call Administrative Assistant Valeria Spindler at 345-3531 ext. 2 to arrange for an audition time. If you can’t audition at any of the times listed above, we will try to schedule a separate time for you, but you will be responsible for bringing and paying an accompanist.
